Description/Duties and Responsibilities


Under the general direction of the City Librarian, the Library Assistant is responsible for providing support to service desks and service teams, answering reference questions, and providing customer service to patrons.

Duties and Responsibilities:
•Assists the day-to-day operations and support of a service desk; answers basic reference questions; determines patron needs and assists patrons in locating materials; instructs patrons on the use of print, online, and other library resources; places materials on hold and prepares materials for transit; processes library materials as needed
•Assists patrons at the Circulation Desk; checks materials in and out; registers patrons and issues library cards; creates and maintains patron records; processes overdue library materials; receives and prepares receipts for money received; answers questions and provides information to patrons; assists patron access to public computers; observes patron confidentiality of library records
•Gathers and tracks statistical data and information, maintains records related to library operations, and prepares summary reports
•Assists in organizing, planning, and presenting programs and events for the Library, including outreach, tours, and visits as needed; conducts passive/self-directed programs for patrons.
•Assists with marketing of library services, including programs and/or outreach development and implementation; prepares materials for use in publicizing and presenting library programs, including flyers and signs; prepares handouts in support of programs
•Establishes positive working relationships with staff, internal partners, outside vendors, community members, and patrons; represents the library and City at various meetings and events
•Assists with maintaining assigned collection areas, including reading reports and identifying items for potential de-selection.
•May work the passport desk as needed
•Provides oversight to branch operations in absence of higher-level staff
•Responds to emergencies as needed and completes and oversees incident report submittals; communicates issues to appropriate staff and other agencies as appropriate
•Performs other duties as assigned

Education and Experience
•High School Diploma or a GED equivalent
•Additional education in a related field is highly desirable
•Two years of professional experience supporting library operations
•Required to obtain and maintain passport acceptance certification within six months of hire
•A valid Class C California driver license or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation to carry out job-related functions

Knowledge and Abilities
•Knowledge of library operations related to circulation and the ability to effectively answer the questions of patrons.
•Knowledge of current classification and cataloging systems and practices and the ability to locate library materials and update bibliographic information.
•Knowledge of audiovisual equipment and the ability to work with outside vendors to maintain equipment.
•Strong customer service skills and the ability to provide program information to patrons in a professional, helpful manner.
•Strong written communication skills and the ability to assist with marketing outreach materials and reports.
•Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to provide instructions to patrons on how to find library materials and operate computer equipment.
•Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with library employees, community members, outside vendors, and patrons.
•Strong conflict management skills and the ability to effectively resolve complex patron issues with a positive and humanistic approach.
•Strong fiscal management skills and the ability to accurately operate a till drawer and perform money handling functions.
•Strong computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
•Strong attention to detail and the ability to produce work that is both accurate and complete.
•Strong organizational skills and the ability to coordinate multiple projects and programs simultaneously, be sensitive to deadlines and changing priorities.
•Ability to maintain confidentiality, behave ethically and professionally, and exercise discretion and sound judgment
•Strong work ethic, accountability and reliability
•Ability to lift, drag, and push files, paper and documents weighing up to 50 pounds

As a City of Santa Clarita public employee, you may be called upon to work as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW) in the event of an emergency (in accordance with Government Code §§ 3100-3109). Before entering upon the duties of employment, all public employees, except those excluded by law, take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation set forth in the California Constitution, declaring them to be Disaster Service Workers in time of need.

Compensation includes enrollment in California Public Employees' Retirement System as a replacement for Social Security plus a competitive benefits package. All appointments are made at step 1 of the salary range unless otherwise authorized by the City Manager.
