What does an HVAC Engineering Manager do at Rinnai?

The Sr. Manager, HVAC Engineering provides both engineering expertise and managerial oversight for the development of HVAC products. Acting in a managerial capacity, this role guides a team of Lead, Senior and Entry level Engineers in advancing HVAC technology for residential and commercial applications. This position is responsible for coordinating complex projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and fostering a culture of innovation within the HVAC engineering department.

What you will do:

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Act as a mentor and guide to Lead and Senior Engineers, promoting skill development and collaboration within the team.
  • Provide strategic direction and technical oversight to ensure high performance and successful project outcomes.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and technical excellence across the engineering team.
  • Oversee the planning and execution of engineering projects related to heat pump water heater technology, from concept to final product.
  • Ensure that projects meet program requirements, stay on schedule, and adhere to budget constraints.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to align project objectives with company goals and ensure efficient resource allocation.
  • Drive advancements in heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics to optimize heat pump system performance, reliability, and energy efficiency.
  • Guide the development, validation, and troubleshooting of HVAC systems, focusing on regulatory compliance and product quality.
  • Identify and implement best practices to streamline workflows, improve product quality, and reduce time-to-market.
  • Ensure that all designs comply with regulatory standards, including UL, ETL, AHRI, ASHRAE, and CSA.
  • Promote industry best practices and actively contribute to the company’s technical reputation in the field.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • KNOWLEDGE
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field; a Master’s degree is a plus.
  • Minimum of 10 years in HVAC engineering with at least 3 years in a leadership role, focusing on HVAC development.
  • In-depth knowledge of ASHRAE, AHRI, UL, CSA, and other relevant regulatory standards.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems and the thermodynamic principles of heat pump cycles. Familiarity with VRF and transcritical CO₂ technology is a plus.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks or similar CAD software, as well as HVAC design software like Carrier HAP, Trane TRACE, or EnergyPlus.

  • Strong skills in planning, resource allocation, and budget management for complex projects.
  • Advanced analytical capabilities to diagnose issues, optimize design, and enhance system efficiency.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly present complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
