JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Coordinator of Special Education or designee, and a credentialed Language, Speech and Hearing Pathologist. Assists in providing speech therapy services to identified students in accordance with Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals, perform a variety of duties in support of student case management services, and maintain records and documentation on students.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required: Registration as a Speech and Language Pathology Assistant with the State of California. Associate Degree from a Speech and Language Pathology Assistant Program. Four months of paid or volunteer experience in a Speech and Language Pathology Assistant program. Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, normal speech, language, and hearing development. Knowledge of language disorders and rehabilitation, articulation disorders and rehabilitation. Knowledge of acquired disorders and rehabilitation, clinical methods and procedures, hearing disorders and aural rehabilitation. Knowledge of effective record keeping practices and procedures. Ability to establish and maintain accurate records and files. Ability to operate modern office equipment (e.g. calculator, duplicating machine, fax machine, etc.). Knowledge of and ability to use word processing, database, and spreadsheet programs to develop and produce correspondence, reports, publications, and projects. Ability to express initiative, adaptability and confidentiality. Ability to compose clear, complete, and concise correspondence and reports independently using correct grammar, syntax, punctuation and spelling. Ability to understand and implement complex oral and written directions given in English. Knowledge of general first aid procedures, if assigned to a school site. Valid California driver license. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Assist in providing student speech therapy services according to IEP goals and treatment plans developed by the credentialed Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP). Assist with the development of IEP goals and objectives for assigned students, and attend IEP meetings when necessary. Conduct speech and language screenings without interpretation, as directed by SLP. Provide direct speech and/or language treatment services as directed by SLP. Follow the implemented or documented treatment plans/IEPs developed by supervising SLP. Document students' progress toward IEP goals and objectives by preparing charts, records, graphs, or other means of documentation. Assist SLP during assessments. Assist in student scheduling. Prepare therapy materials and equipment for use in the classroom including therapy activities such as picture cards, worksheets and audio equipment. Adapt or modify instructional materials as determined by student needs for teacher use in the classroom. Observe and control behavior and interaction of students according to approved procedures. Inspect, maintain and operate augmentative devices and equipment. Attend a variety of meetings, workshops and in-service trainings to maintain current knowledge of developments in the field of Speech Language Pathology. Effectively communicate and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Participate in Medi-Cal LEA/MAA program. Perform other related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL :

Stand and sit for extended periods of time. See and read printed matter with or without vision aids. Hear and understand speech at normal levels. Ability to communicate so others will clearly understand normal conversation and group presentations. Ability to bend, twist, kneel and stoop. Ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 25 lbs. on a regular basis and up to 40 lbs. occasionally. Ability to reach in all directions.

MENTAL :

Able to concentrate on a single task for up to two (2) hours at a time. Able to learn quickly and adapt to a variety of machinery, instructions, and task methods. Able to meet deadlines in terms of work assignment schedules.

C. SOCIAL :

  1. Interact daily in person with other members of the school staff and possess comfortable interpersonal skills and cooperative attitudes.
  2. Because of the time urgent nature of duties and because work product of position is interdependent with that of other staff, consistent attendance is required.?
  3. Convey an understanding, patient attitude toward students, parents, staff and community.
  4. Maintain the privacy of confidential information.
