Job Description

The Public Safety Officer performs duties to ensure the safety and security of University students, patients, visitors and employees; applies crime risk and safety hazard prevention techniques, methods, practices, and enforces University laws and regulations; exercises the power of arrest as an armed Public Safety Department employee. Primary responsibilities include patrolling assigned areas in a vehicle or on foot, providing assistance and direction to University visitors, students and employees; confronting and questioning suspicious persons on University property; monitoring and reporting security or safety hazards; investigating and reporting criminal offenses; responding to fire and security alarms; providing initial fire rescue and emergency medical care; assisting public safety agencies; providing security for visiting dignitaries; investigating vehicle accidents; enforcing University vehicle traffic and parking regulations; providing field training for junior officers; and performing other duties as assigned. Requires interpersonal and communication skills, physical and psychological fitness, ability to work shifts and overtime, and successful completion of training programs. Minimum qualifications include an Associate's degree in business, security, safety administration, or criminal justice; one year of experience in a position requiring high public interaction; minimum age of 21; possession and maintenance of an armed private security officer license under St. Louis City Police Department guidelines; passing psychological and drug screenings; and obtaining valid Missouri/Illinois chauffeur's and Motor Vehicle licenses.
