Public Health Educator

The Position

GENERAL SUMMARY: This position works as part of a team at the community and regional level to develop and implement policy systems, and environmental interventions with a focus on preventing and reducing youth tobacco and marijuana use.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Works with community groups and directs educational efforts to influence public knowledge, attitudes, and behavior with regard to youth tobacco and cannabis use.
• Supports and implements policy, systems and environmental changes to make healthy choices practical and available to focus population.
• Educate and inform policymakers, decision-makers, and stakeholders about evidence-based policies, systems and environmental changes to prevent the initiation of commercial tobacco and marijuana product use among youth and young adults.
• Organizes, facilitates and participates in community coalitions and task forces on various topics.
• Screens and evaluates materials and methods used to determine the effectiveness of programming.
• Supports assessment, statistical evaluation, report writing, budget preparation.

• Develops and maintains effective working relationships with community-based organizations, public agencies, health care organizations, schools, etc.
• Supports preparation of news releases and material for media.
• Develops social media and website messaging for local and regional audience.
• Performs other duties as requested.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of health education and public health theory, health principles/teachings and medical terminology. Ability to develop and present materials effectively to a variety of groups from a variety of social and economic backgrounds.

The Requirements & Selection Process

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's Degree in Public Health, Nursing, Community Health, Health Promotion, Health Education, or a closely related field, prefer 3 years of experience in the planning, implementation and evaluation of health education programs OR a Master's degree with a preference of 1 year of experience.

Additional Requirements: CHES certification preferred. Washington State RN license, if applicable. Performance of job duties requires driving on a regular basis, a valid Washington State driver's license, the use of the incumbent's personal motor vehicle when a District fleet vehicle is not available for use, and proof of appropriate auto insurance.
