GENERAL SUMMARY: The EHS Officer has the responsibility to develop, implement, review, & monitor the accountability of the Environmental and Life safety standards and operations as well as EHS inspections and safety training for the OSUIT campus. The program goal is to reduce safety risks and maintain life safety protocols for the OSUIT campus.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop, review, and maintain current policy and procedures in the areas of campus and life safety.
- Make periodic checks in academic, administrative, and student areas to ensure compliance with policy and procedures, noting concerns and making recommendations for resolution.
- Maintain records on safety issues such as fire extinguisher maintenance, review of hazardous material labeling, tracking, and disposal; maintain appropriate MSDS records for compliance.
- This position serves as the Safety Officer for the emergency management team during critical incidents.
- Review accidents as they relate to safety issues, track campus wide workers compensation accidents and related costs.
- Develop/facilitate/coordinate safety training and professional development opportunities and provide guidance in safety areas for compliance with OSHA and other regulatory agencies.
- Conduct routine safety audits of all facilities and communicate audit results to the Director of Public Safety.
- Maintain a quality control program to ensure standards are met; oversee and maintain ADA compliance.
- Perform monthly inspections of AED’s as well as fire extinguishers (including portable), fire alarm panel and sprinkler systems campus wide and at the GOPO (downtown residence hall).
- Conduct building and construction reviews regarding fire and life safety regulations and emergency lighting checks. Determine room occupancy.
- Conduct CPR and AED training twice per year, (May and October) with multiple classes scheduled each month.
- Work with Technology Services to maintain camera system operation.
- Conduct a monthly fire drill at the daycare center.
- Work at campus auction each year, and all graduation ceremonies (4/yr) to address safety concerns.
- Coordinate various campus visits from life safety vendors, obtain project quotes and enter in OKCorral procurement system for payment.
- Host quarterly safety training topics and schedule training sessions for safety compliance (PEOSH & OSHA).
- Serve as point of contact with external provider of panic alarms. Test panic alarm devises (fobs/push buttons) quarterly to verify they are in working order and appropriate responses are maintained.
- Order safety equipment as needed for Physical Plant employees.
- Coordinate hazardous material, battery, and industrial waste disposal for safety compliance and record keeping for DOL compliance.
- Perform specimen disposal in applicable areas of campus.
- Conduct fume hood, eyewash, showers, and drench hose checks.
- Conduct laboratory surveys, chemical storage, signage, documentation, SOPs, process reviews.
- Conduct personal protective equipment reviews and advisement.
- Maintain chemical inventories and conduct high hazard chemical reviews.
- Manage the Chemical Safety Assistant Program that each department should be using to record and track the use and disposal of various chemicals campus wide.
- Assist when necessary, regarding any hazardous material spillages.
- Coordinate cart/forklift driving, operation, and safety training (including training for work study students).
- Provide required training on all pertinent topics to the campus (OSHA programs, fire inspection training, electrical safety, life/safety training, etc.)
- Assist with job hazard analysis and provide shop surveys (non-lab areas).
- OSHA 300 logs; maintain injury reporting for campus.
- Maintain dormitory fire log for CLERY ACT reporting purposes. Assist with Annual Clery report as needed.
- Compile and produce the Drug-Free Schools Act Notice biennially.
- Collaborate and work with other departments and other OSU campuses relative to EHS operations.
- Additional life safety and security duties as assigned.
