Job Overview:

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Controller to manage the financial operations of our commercial construction company. This key position will oversee all accounting functions, financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance to ensure the company's financial health. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in construction accounting, project management cost control, and knowledge of industry-specific financial regulations.

Responsibilities:

  • Financial Reporting & Analysis:
    • Prepare and manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
    • Analyze financial data, trends, and variances to provide insights and recommendations to the executive team.
    • Maintain accurate records of all financial transactions, ensuring adherence to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and construction industry standards.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting:
    • Oversee the preparation and management of the company’s annual budget.
    • Collaborate with project managers to develop project-specific budgets and ensure they align with overall company goals.
    • Perform regular forecasting to assess future financial performance and identify potential issues.
  • Cost Management:
    • Monitor job cost reports and ensure accurate allocation of costs to projects.
    • Oversee procurement processes and ensure effective cost control for materials, labor, and subcontractor expenses.
    • Ensure the efficient processing of change orders and their integration into project financials.
  • Cash Flow & Treasury Management:
    • Manage cash flow, ensuring sufficient working capital for ongoing and upcoming projects.
    • Oversee accounts receivable and payable functions, ensuring timely billing and collections.
    • Work with banks and lenders to secure financing when necessary, managing debt and credit facilities.
  • Compliance & Auditing:
    • Ensure compliance with tax laws, insurance requirements, and other regulatory guidelines affecting the construction industry.
    • Coordinate and manage internal and external audits, ensuring proper documentation and procedures are followed.
  • Team Management:
    • Supervise, mentor, and manage the accounting team, ensuring accurate and timely completion of tasks.
    • Collaborate with other departments to streamline processes and improve efficiencies.
  • Systems & Processes:
    • Continuously evaluate and improve accounting software and reporting systems.
    • Implement best practices for accounting processes and internal controls to minimize risk.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience in construction accounting, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role.
  • Strong knowledge of construction-specific financials, including job costing, project accounting, and contract management.
  • Proficient in accounting software (e.g., Viewpoint, Procore, Sage 300 Construction, QuickBooks, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with large-scale commercial construction projects.
  • Familiarity with construction lien laws and bonding.
  • Experience in managing relationships with clients, vendors, and subcontractors.
