Job Description

Job Description: The successful candidate will support specialized engineering support in advanced statistical methods for risk evaluation of splashdown loads, coupled loads analysis Independent Validation and Verification (IV&V), splashdown risk algorithm development, and mission operation support is required to support commercial crew providers spaceflight loads assessments within the Structural and Thermal Analysis Branch (STSB). Duties and responsibilities are within ongoing engineering projects in the NASA Langley Research Center Engineering Directorate and will include the following: Development, conversion, check-out, correlation, reduction, and updating of loads and dynamics Finite Element Models (FEM). This includes being able to translate the Finite element models into models that can be used by LS-DYNA. In addition, being able to troubleshoot and modify Nastran DMAP codes as needed. Assessment of weather and natural environment models used to support spaceflight loads assessments. This includes creating the appropriate correction factors based on the historical outputs from the national blend of models (NBM) using advanced statistical methods. Modify and update the statistical splashdown risk evaluation tools as needed. Evaluate and provide recommendations on how to enhance the risk process to include more advanced statistical methods. Provide on-console mission support for all Commercial Crew Program (CCP) missions providing insights in the risk tolerances being accepted by the current landing flight rules, weather/natural environment models, and vehicle loads. The work will need to be documented in presentation formats, reports, and technical memos. The successful candidate will present their work to internal NASA groups, project leadership, and customers at project meetings, branch meetings, and design reviews as requested by project managers. Required Qualifications: Finite Element Models (FEM ). Advanced statistical methods. Knowledge of NASTRAN analysis software. Independent Validation and Verification (IV&V). Risk algorithm development. Pre/post processors such as FEMAP and/or Patran. Microsoft office tools is required. All duties and responsibilities will be performed in person at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA. US citizenship or Permanent Residence required.
